In September 2007, PT. SEI was founded and sponsored by Grassroots Business Initiatives (GBI) / International Finance Corporation(IFC) in collaboration with four Prominent Angels Investors in Indonesia (Teddy Permadi Rachmat, Shanti Poesposoetjipto, Pramukti Surjaudaja, Amit Lohia) to support the Indonesian Small Medium Enterprises - nurturing their social mission objectives while bringing greater commercial rigor- to increase employment and economic empowerment for the poor and disadvantaged. In 2008, Grassroots Business Initiatives (GBI) was reorganized as an autonomous non-profit organization, the Grassroots Business Fund (GBF). The objectives of PT SEI is to bring business inputs to enterprises and initiatives, which are promising, past their initial pilot stage, have a solid combination of commercialization and outreach to grassroots people but are in need of strengthening before scaling up and/or replication.
